KANSAI NATIONAL LIBRARY COMPETITION
We believed this enormous library, whose main function is the storage of texts, should be designed rationally and systematically as factories are. The stacks are located in the basement, where the interior climate is stable, to facilitate the preservation of books, and the plan is made rectangular to accommodate the conveyance system for books and to enhance flexibility. The aboveground floors for users of the library have a spatial system that facilitates supervision and suggests the spatial system of an airport terminal. A platelike glass atrium extended from the third basement floor separates spaces that are not controlled from spaces that are controlled. Air currents and heat generated in the atrium are used to air condition the building.
