||The elementary school is in a newly developed residential area in a small city in the Tohoku region. The Ministry of Education, in accordance with the School Education Law, prescribes the program of Japanese elementary schools in detail. The aim here was to rearrange the relationships between rooms and thereby create a new school program that is not bound by the established system. The facility is divided into rooms that are made available to the public and can serve as a community center and the classrooms. All classroom walls are made movable, and joint classes can be
held by opening the movable partition between adjacent classrooms. These spaces are designed so that instead of being restrictive they encourage children and teachers to be creative and explore different ways of using them.
