||This entrance to a subway station is located next to Ark Hills, the
development that includes Suntory Hall. We imagined a place that would be lively even at night, with food stalls doing business nearby. We prepared a scheme with a stepped seating area arranged in a semicircle and entered into negotiations with the ward authorities. Told that the entrance could occupy only a minimum area because the place is essentially a park, we had to abandon that scheme. The entrance is little more than a shelter over a large stairway. We proposed a structure assembled from 10 mm by 38 mm flat bars so as to suggest sunlight filtered through the leaves of trees. A floor that can serve as a stage is on top of the stairs, and an outdoor outlet for a PA system is also provided.
