HOUSE IN MARUYAMACHO
This is a dwelling that includes separate ateliers for a designer and an illustrator, who each work independently. Because the project area is in a residential district that has always been densely built-up, the road to the front is narrow, and there is an existing basement on the site, the area where bearing capacity could be assured was limited. The structural frame was assembled with a concrete structure resembling an enormous bookcase erected on this tiny area, embraced by a lightweight steel frame that takes all the horizontal forces in the concrete frame. Bringing in light and breezes, a stair has been placed in a glass case on the west side, commanding a view of the trees lining the private road on the adjoining site, while mechanical services and storage have been installed in the concrete structure on the east side. The leftover irregularly shaped space between them contains the ateliers and living areas.
