HONMACHI APARTMENTS
While the project site is near Tokyo Opera City, behind the layer of high-rise housing located along the Koshu-kaido and a step away from the city’s hustle and bustle, it is in a place suspended within a non-residential neighborhood. In the semi-basement is a studio for the wife, who is a piano teacher, and a rental office. On the first floor are small, 26m2 rental rooms contained in a reinforced concrete box, and placed on top of this is a two-story steel-framed residence. This architecture is like an urban device for carrying out small-scale economic activities. As the ground conditions are not good, a heavy reinforced concrete structure has been embedded in the ground for stability, allowing a light steel-structure house to be placed on top of that substructure. The reinforced-concrete part also becomes the economic substructure. While it is expected that it will be mainly used for the music office and the musician resident, by installing a staircase like a foyer space shared by the landlord and tenants, they can all live together like a big family.
