YOTSUYA APARTMENTS
This is an eight-unit cooperative house located in an inner-city residential area of spacious single-family homes and medium-sized apartment houses. Given a situation in which the site is set back more than 20m from the front road, and shares fences with the adjoining sites on all four sides, we sought a solution that would provide a bright and relaxed urban lifestyle. The building plan is divided into a four-square grid by shear walls that take the lateral forces, with a post in each of the four corners that takes only vertical loads. A shaft has been placed in the center to contain all the wiring and pipes for the electrical and mechanical services of each dwelling unit, and the outer perimeter is entirely lined with aluminum-framed windows. Each unit takes the form of a row house accessed from the first floor, resulting in a combination of four maisonettes with dry areas on the first basement level, and four maisonettes with rooftop terraces. More than 90% of outer perimeter windows are modifiable elements that can be altered by the residents as they wish.
