Unfinished Box in Yashio
This is a project to rebuild a house on an estate in a community that has existed since the Kamakura Period. The clients are a scholar who is the head of this old family and his wife, a poet. They wanted an architectural space that was a contemporary solution to the problem of traditional context. Instead of a functional organization of spaces, a continuous, one room-like space was arranged between two plates and subdivided by large fixtures deployed according to a kiwari-like module. This ample interior space can accommodate diverse events. A veranda-like spatial cushion is installed between inside and outside, and the roof is a double-layered roof of the kind used in traditional storehouses in the Kanto region. Such spatial devices are used to recreate the passive heat environment of traditional Japanese houses.
