||This is the conversion of a disused elementary school into a citizen interchange facility for the town of Kyonan, Minamiboso.
A design collective of four offices contributed to the proposal. We proposed an accommodation facility, conceived as a roadside station to which was added the functions of agricultural tourism and two lodging areas.
In practice, we were in charge of the renovation of the ground level of the old school building into public spaces (information lounge, children's plaza, gallery), and the addition to the old school building frontage of a semi-outdoor buffer zone approximately 70m in length, called the "machi no engawa" (town verandah).
At ground level there is a portico-like space in front of a row of shops, and at the upper level there is a broad space like an open balcony in front of the lodgings.
By incorporating passive environmental devices such as heat-storage panels made of black-and-white resin, tents as heat barriers, thermo-control return ducts, air-pressure ventilation fans, and canopies, these become spaces for enjoying the warm climate of Minamiboso.
