This project involved the renovation of the basement of a house built with expensive surface materials in the bubble era. The house is in a residential district on high ground in the Nishi-Azabu district, where there are a number of chic restaurants. The owner decided to work overseas and wanted to lease the basement. When we accepted the commission, the use to which the space would eventually be put was not yet determined. It could become a gallery, a bar, an office or an apartment. We took out the intermediate floor between the two basement levels and created an opening to introduce light and air. The work was mostly a matter of removing materials that the previous architect had attached.
